Open Water Lifeguard

Open Water Lifeguard (OWL) Qualification (Bolt-On)
Open water swimming is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK. The OWL qualification has been specifically designed to equip Open Water Lifeguards with the skills required to supervise and provide rescue cover for planned, organised and risk assessed activities in still or non-tidal water. The OWL Bolt-On course for holders of the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) requires a minimum of 8 hours of training followed by a practical assessment.
Course Pre-Requisites:
Every candidate attending an OWL course must:
Have a current, in date NPLQ
Be 16-years-old or over at the time of assessment
Be competent and confident in open water
Be able to submerge under the water confidently
Be able to swim at least 400 metres in a pool/open water, swimming continuously on their front and showing urgency.
Course Content:
There are three sections to the course, and a candidate must pass all three to attain the qualification.
Section 1 – The Open Water Lifeguard, environment, hazards and supervision
Section 2 – Responding to an emergency and taking action
Section 3 – CPR and First Aid

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) Gen 10
29th March - 2nd April 2026
This is the most widely recognised lifeguard qualification in the UK & Ireland and is a recruitment requirement for a number of jobs within the leisure industry from Pool Lifeguard to Centre Manager.
The course will be taking place at Epsom College Fitness Centre form Sunday 29th March to Thursday 2nd April 2026.

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches (New Candidate)
9th - 10th April 2026
This is a New Candidate Course & will run over two days from 9.00am - 5.00pm approx.) on the first day and from 9.00am - 6.00pm (approx.) on the second day.
Candidates should be able to swim on their front and back, climb out of the pool unaided, be able to demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the floor and be 16 years of age or over on the day of the assessment.

This is a one-day Renewal Course & will run from 9.00am - 5.00pm (approx.)
